It is health that is the real wealth, not pieces of gold and silver. – Mahatma Gandhi
This cliche quote by the beloved Mahatma Gandhi segues to the topic of today’s post: NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTATION.
Malnutrition – the condition of not taking in sufficient levels of nutrients – is not recognized by most people as an issue of concern until it has reached extreme levels. The MOST extreme level, of course, being starvation. And then there are conditions like beriberi (deficiency of thiamine, aka vitamin B1), pellagra (deficiency of vitamin B3) and osteoporosis (deficiencies of calcium and vitamin D).
Deficiencies can lead to a variety of health problems, such as issues with digestion, skin problems, stunted or defective bone growth, and even dementia. Symptoms of nutritional deficiency range as widely as the number of nutrients that our bodies use everyday (this leaves room for any symptom under the moon!).
A nutritional deficiency occurs when the body doesn’t absorb the necessary amount of a nutrient. So you could be eating a diet rich with, for example, magnesium-dense foods (i.e. avocado, yogurt, whole grains, dark greens) and NOT be absorbing magnesium and thus not receiving its benefits. Magnesium, like most other nutrients, comes in many chemical forms – some that absorb into your cells more readily than others. There are a myriad of reasons that you may experience deficiencies – maybe you have a condition that requires above-normal levels of certain vitamins and minerals; maybe your unique physiology does not absorb particular nutrients optimally; maybe you’re not taking the best form of a supplement; maybe you suffer from a chronic illness that has blinded you from the possibility of nutritional deficiency; maybe you’ve misdiagnosed your B-deficiency for a D-deficiency; and maybe you have no idea why these nutrients are needed by your body so you don’t care to take supplements… You get my point. How do you find out what’s right for you?
This is where Dr. Camp comes in. In your consultation, he will thoroughly evaluate your current diet and supplement/medication regimen. Then he’ll likely have you take any of a few tests he has in his arsenal to analyze your blood and urine for exactly what nutrients your body is lacking. (Click the following links for details on each test.)
Once your test results become available, Dr. Camp will be able to see what exactly what YOUR body needs to achieve optimal levels of nutritional health. With this information, he will work with a compounding nutraceutical company to formulate a unique personalized nutrients supplement that will include the vitamins and minerals YOU need in the strength and form that YOU need it in. You’ll have the option to have your supplement made as either a powder (to mix in either water, juice or a smoothie) or in capsule form. Ingredients in your formulation will include a combination of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, pharmaceutical-grade herbal extracts. Again, the unique formulation will be based on your test results and evaluation by Dr. Camp.
Needless to say, we are very, very excited to be able to offer this service to our patients. Those who already have their formula love it! Once you reach levels of optimal nutritional health, we suspect you’ll find that symptoms you’ve suffered with for years (like fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, sleep issues) will melt away… You’ll establish a baseline level of health that may shed light on non-nutrition issues that are affecting your body.
